Serious men are inevitably shallow, just as virtuous women are always dull. One must be a bit of a scoundrel to know the depths of one’s self.

I was right to reject Vivaldi in my youth, when he was the fashion. Unless art is in constant revolution, it atrophies. Now that I begin to find my own voice, I can enjoy Vivaldi without becoming an echo of him.

I had just enough Jesuit education to make my honesty doubtful, even to myself.

Nobody has ever written an honest autobiography. Intuitively, we all understand that this is true and we know why it is true. Then we forget that theological and philosophical theories are all disguised autobiographies.
